Royal Icing


1 1/4 cup (313 ml) shortening
few grains salt
almond flavoring to taste
white vanilla flavoring to taste
1/4 cup (63 ml) scalded milk, cooled (more if needed)
4 2/5 lbs (2 kilos) icing sugar


Mix ingredients together with an electric mixer until smooth and fluffy (up to 10 minutes). Spread on cake with spatula. Use baking parchment paper to make cone for decorating. Extra icing can be stored in covered container in refrigerator for an extended period of time.
(Sharon prefers this icing; Fred likes butter icing better.)
This is the icing usually used for decorating cakes, etc.
